Wigan Athletic 1-0 Shrewsbury Town

Alex Revell's first goal for Wigan Athletic earned a narrow third win in a row at home to Shrewsbury Town.

Revell brought a poor game to life on 36 minutes when he headed in Yanic Wildschut's cross from close range.

The Latics might have then doubled their advantage moments later, but Tim Chow could only volley past the post.

Shrewsbury went closest through on-loan Sulley Kaikai, but his effort was well saved by Jussi Jaaskelainen as the Latics went 11 league games unbeaten.

Micky Mellon's Shrewsbury are now just one point clear of trouble in 20th, going into Tuesday night's trip to Sheffield United.

Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell told BBC Radio Manchester:

"It's another big win for us. We expect that every week now. We know the competition in this league is fierce.

"We know we'll get teams that come and ask us a lot of questions and put us under a lot of pressure.

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"In terms of fight, honesty and all the brilliant qualities you want from your players, we were faultless. We come away very disappointed that we haven't got anything.

"We lacked the cutting edge in the final third but, given the level of players Wigan are bringing on, it's different quality.

"As a group of fans, they were fantastic - they really helped drive the boys on. More than 800 have travelled and we're very sorry that we couldn't send them home with a victory."
