Wigan Athletic 0-1 Burton Albion

Abdenasser El Khayati
Abdenasser El Khayati has scored six gaols in 18 appearances this season

Abdenasser El Khayati scored a late winner for Burton as Wigan lost at home for the first time this season in League One.

After an uneventful first half, Wigan went close through Tim Chow's header and Michael Jacobs' free-kick.

The Brewers goal came from an excellent break by Timmy Thiele who squared for El Khayati to tuck home.

Gary Caldwell's side nearly equalised late on when Reece James hit the outside of the post.

It is the Latics' first defeat in 12 games in the league but they remain in the play-off places in fifth.

Burton meanwhile are up to third with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's men only two points off the automatic promotion spots.

Burton boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink told BBC Radio Derby:

"It was a big, big win but more importantly a very good performance. I think at times with the ball we could be more creative, more daring but I think it was a proud moment for us today.

"We don't complain when we have injures or suspension, we get on with it and try and do the job. If you look at the game yes they had one chance in the second half, it was a good chance but it was ricocheted.

"This was a difficult place to come and they are 100% going to challenge."
