Crawley Town 1-2 Northampton Town

Joel Byrom
Joel Byrom set Northampton on their way to their fourth consecutive win

Northampton continued to ignore takeover talk as they won at Crawley to make it seven league games unbeaten.

The visitors went ahead when Simon Walton fouled Lawson D'Ath in the box and, after Marc Richards had seen his penalty saved, Joel Byrom followed up.

The Cobblers were 2-0 up when John-Joe O'Toole curled in from 25 yards.

Walton's 61st-minute penalty, after Brendan Moloney was sent off for fouling Rhys Murphy in the box, reduced the deficit, but the visitors held on.

Crawley should have levelled through substitute Shamir Fenelon, but a superb double save from Cobblers keeper Adam Smith helped the visitors earn their fourth straight league win.

On Tuesday, Kelvin Thomas' proposed takeover of Northampton Town from David Cardoza moved a step closer as a memorandum of understanding was made between him and Northampton Borough Council over a £10.25m loan and the land around Sixfields Stadium.

The deal would see the debt wiped out, with the council taking over land near Sixfields for development in return.

Crawley Town manager Mark Yates told BBC Surrey:

"The first real bit of play they had, they scored. We didn't compete very well with the goal-kick to start and they played off that. We were sloppy in possession and we allowed them to press us and allowed them to look like a really good side.

"Their three behind the striker were causing us problems and we conceded again from nothing and as soon as they hit it you knew it was going in. I suppose what's happened to them and what's happening with the takeover I think it was just going to be their night.

"Northampton have a quality squad and I am not going to go on about money but their budget is somewhat bigger than ours. They've got Nicky Adams, who we had, flying high in the division higher and with players like that, they have some quality. We knew we were up against a top side."

Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Northampton:

"There was no sitting back. The talk before was that we have to be relentless and ruthless and keep the standards high.

"I thought the standards were exceptionally high today with the ball on a difficult surface and without the ball.

"We had to make another change just before the game. Zander Diamond as well possibly shouldn't have played - both of the centre-halves were sick on the way down."
