Thomas Muller celebrates his goal against Schalke
Thomas Muller now has 22 goals for club and country this season

Leaders Bayern Munich opened up an eight-point gap at the top of the Bundesliga with a 3-1 win at Schalke.

Max Meyer cancelled out David Alaba's opener before Javi Martinez restored Bayern's lead.

Germany international Thomas Muller then struck as Bayern made the most of second-placed Borussia Dortmund's loss at Hamburg on Friday.

There was a minute's silence at Bundesliga games and players wore black armbands to mark the Paris attacks.

"You have to work for every victory in the Bundesliga and we always have to go to 100%," Muller said.

"Opponents don't make it easy and recently the five-man defence has become fashionable.

"I don't know if supporters like it so much, but the opponents try and stop everything."

Elsewhere, Max Kruse netted twice in Wolfsburg's 6-0 rout of Werder Bremen.

Stuttgart's 4-0 defeat at home to Augsburg was delayed by 15 minutes because of tightened security checks at stadiums across the country.

Borussia Monchengladbach are up to fourth after Andre Schubert celebrated his first match in charge with a 2-1 win at home to Hanover 96.

Gladbach took the lead through Ibrahima Traore and Hanover equalised thanks to Poland international Artur Sobiech, but Brazil striker Raffael scored the winner six minutes from time.

Former Manchester United forward Javier Hernandez scored his first brace for Bayer Leverkusen in their 3-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Augsburg climbed off the bottom of the table with an emphatic 4-0 win at Stuttgart as woeful defending by the hosts allowed the visitors to take an early 2-0 lead, with both goals by midfielder Alexander Esswein.

Defender Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker grabbed a third before former South Korea captain Koo Ja-Cheol scored Augsburg's fourth.

The Rhine derby finished goalless as Mainz drew at Cologne.
