Raith Rovers moved to fourth in the Scottish Championship with a draw against Queen of the South at Palmerston Park.

Rovers took an early lead courtesy of an own goal from Queens goalkeeper Robbie Thomson, who fumbled a cross.

The hosts levelled shortly after half-time, Iain Russell diverting home after a fine Alex Harris run and cross.

The Doonhammers enjoyed the better of the second period but could not fashion a winner and remain sixth.

James Craigen produced a lovely piece of skill to carve out the game's first real opportunity in the opening 20 minutes, lifting the ball over the Queens cover defence down the left and crossing for Ross Callachan, whose shot was deflected wide.

And Kyle Benedictus almost scrambled home the opener barely three minutes later, but his effort was lashed clear of the goalmouth.

That piercing salvo of pressure would result in Rovers seizing the lead, however. Thomson contrived to spill Lewis Toshney's arcing cross over his own head and into the net.

Rovers pressed to extend their advantage but Queen of the South, on their rare forays forward, looked dangerous on the break - Russell ballooning an effort high over the crossbar when in space on the left of the penalty area as the hosts swept forward.

It was Russell who levelled the scores just after the interval as the hosts burst into life, turning the ball in following a fantastic assist from Hibernian loanee Harris.

The 21-year-old winger then rasped a left-foot drive from 20 yards that zipped straight into the arms of Rovers keeper Kevin Cuthbert and Derek Lyle failed to reach Lewis Kidd's low cross with the goal beckoning.

Substitute Craig Wighton should have regained Rovers' lead but he swivelled and shot straight at Thomson from inside in the area.

And Queen of the South missed a glorious opportunity to snatch the game late on as replacement Gary Oliver, sent through on goal by Lyle's flick, could only stab his shot into the body of Cuthbert.
