Louis Almond scored the only goal as Southport beat Gateshead and climbed out of the National League relegation zone.
Almond was left unmarked and swept home a short corner from Paul Rutherford 11 minutes into the second half.
He had earlier crashed an effort against the crossbar.
Gateshead's Ben Clark had a first-half header cleared off the line, while Paddy McLaughlin and Adam Wrightson had late chances, but Southport held on.
