Hartlepool United 2-0 Salford City (aet)

Salford City's FA Cup adventure came to an end as Hartlepool claimed an extra-time win to seal a third-round home tie against Championship high-fliers Derby.

Salford, the non-league side co-owned by five former Manchester United players, hit the post in normal time through Richie Allen's deflected shot.

Scott Fenwick powerfully headed in Rhys Oates's cross as the League Two side punished Salford for missing chances.

Pools clinched victory through Mikael Mandron's fierce volley from six yards.

Ronnie Moore's men will now host Derby at Victoria Park on Saturday, 9 January.

Dream over for Salford

Hartlepool are 53 places higher in the football ladder than their Northern Premier League Premier Division visitors, but needed over 210 minutes to make their superiority count.

The home side came into the replay on the back of a 4-0 league drubbing at Portsmouth, while Salford had the luxury of an extended break following the postponement of their weekend match against Whitby.

And the visitors - co-owned by Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt - looked sharper than their opponents for much of this match.

Hartlepool rode their luck on occasions as Salford threatened, leading to boos from the home fans at both half-time and the end of normal time.

But they produced two moments of quality in extra-time to stop Salford reaching the third round for the first time in their 75-year history.

Both goals came from wide areas on the right, Oates picking out the run of Fenwick before Brad Walker's clip was smashed in by Mandron.

Hartlepool boss Ronnie Moore: "It was hard, no good for my health. Salford were brilliant - or were we poor? A bit of both.

"Their managers can be proud of their side and be gutted they didn't win. It was nice to get in front at last, but we should be doing better and that's no disrespect to Salford.

"We've been on TV - we want to be better than that. They put some past the post and over the bar, but they had too much possession for a non-league side."

Salford manager Anthony Johnson: "I'm absolutely devastated. The players could not have put any more in.

"We're proud of what the boys have done. Over 180 minutes we were the better side.

"We were not worried about coming here and enjoyed it. Their goal was a psychological blow as much as anything.

"We put in an unbelievable performance, as good as we've had here as managers."
