Southend United 4-1 Bury

Southend celebrate
Noel Hunt celebrates after opening the scoring for Southend

Noel Hunt scored twice as Southend United eased to victory against Bury at Roots Hall in League One.

The ex-Reading striker prodded in after Ben Coker's shot hit the bar before slotting home a second after a mistake by Bury goalkeeper Dan Bachmann.

Leon Clarke raced clear to pull a goal back for Bury just before the break.

Dave Mooney extended the hosts lead from the spot after Nathan Cameron fouled Jack Payne, before Payne smashed into the top corner to seal the win.

The victory for Phil Brown's Shrimpers sees them overtake Bury and move into seventh place, outside the play-offs on goal difference, while the Shakers drop to eighth.

Bury manager David Flitcroft told BBC Radio Manchester:

"I spoke to the players for a good 20 minutes after the game to try and understand how we are so far off what we do and what we do daily.

"The performance wasn't acceptable from us as a football club. Over 100 fans have travelled down at a difficult time, when money is tight at Christmas, and we haven't been able to perform. That disappoints me.

"The performance wasn't acceptable in the first half - it's as bad as we've been. At 2-1 I felt we were in the game, but individual defending and defending as a unit was poor all night."
