Newport County 2-2 AFC Wimbledon

AFC Wimbledon's Lyle Taylor celebrates a goal
Lyle Taylor celebrates his equaliser

Newport County relinquished a two-goal interval lead as AFC Wimbledon fought-back to earn a point at Rodney Parade.

Alex Rodman's long-range effort and a Paul Robinson own-goal put John Sheridan's team in charge.

But Lyle Taylor struck within 25 seconds of the restart and then equalised with 11 minutes remaining.

Lenell John-Lewis had a goal ruled out for offside and Wimbledon - inspired by substitute Adebayo Akinfenwa - went close in the dying minutes.

The results sees Newport move up to 20th in the table while Wimbledon - without a win in six games - drop to 15th.

Newport County manager John Sheridan told BBC Radio Wales:

"We just switched off. I was very pleased with the way we played in the first half, we got ourselves into a winning position and you could never see the score line ending up in a draw because we were very comfortable.

"Whether I'm hard on the players or not I like the team to improve and I want us to improve and to win every game we play.

"Deep down we know we've thrown two points away. It was criminal."

AFC Wimbledon manager Neal Ardley told BBC Radio London:

"When you're 2-0 down after half an hour a point's a great result. I'm actually disappointed we didn't go and win it in the end because I thought we were the team that were most likely to.

"We couldn't have got much more wrong in the first 25 to 30 minutes. We lost every first ball, every second ball and we just looked all over the shop.

"I thought the way we came out in the second half and the way we played through it all was immense, we've just got to learn not to start the way we did."
