York ended a run of nine straight defeats and moved out of the relegation zone with a win over Morecambe.
Aaron Wildig had an attempt cleared off the line before defender Dave Winfield headed in James Berrett's cross.
The Minstermen went 2-0 up when Berrett fired a low shot from the edge of the box which beat goalkeeper Barry Roche.
Jamie Devitt pulled a goal back from eight yards and Wildig saw a shot deflected wide, but Jackie McNamara's side held on to secure his first win.
York City boss Jackie McNamara told to BBC Radio York:
"It feels great, it's a relief all round for the players, management and the fans.
"It's been a long time coming and it's been a difficult month, shall we say.
"Today I thought everybody played their part in the victory.
"I thought it should have been more comfortable than what it was. It was a bit nervy towards the end."
