Millwall 0-1 Walsall

Milan Lalkovic
Milan Lalkovic has now scored six league goals this season

Walsall returned to the top of League One with a tight win at Millwall.

The home side started strongly as both Steve Morison and Aiden O'Brien nearly broke the deadlock from close range.

Midway through the first half the Saddlers took the lead as Milan Lalkovic capitalised on Sid Nelson's misjudgement to slot home.

O'Brien came close to equalising for the Lions late on but his firm header from Shane Ferguson's cross struck the bar as Walsall held on for victory.

The result saw Walsall, who are unbeaten in their two games under new manager Sean O'Driscoll, move above Burton into first position whilst Millwall remain 11th following their third consecutive league defeat.

Millwall manager Neil Harris told BBC Radio London:

"I am disappointed for the players. I thought first half we should have been in front. We gave another poor goal away and find ourselves behind again against a good team.

"Second half we certainly chased it well and we created lots of chances, put numerous balls in the box and looked a real handful. We really looked really attack-minded.

"Sometimes it's not meant to be and I think today might just be one of those occasions."

Walsall head coach Sean O'Driscoll told BBC WM 95.6:

"We're delighted obviously. I said to them before the game I have my opinion on them as players, and that will fluctuate as some of them surprise me and some of them disappoint me, but my opinion of them as characters is really high.

"Watching them play today, I thought they showed how well they can play and what a great bunch of lads they are."
