Craig Gunn struck the post in a dominant first half for the hosts and he eventually found the net on the hour mark with a low right-foot effort.
The home side were two up 10 minutes later thanks to Thomas Reilly's strike.
Graham Webster had the only chances of note for Montrose - who have not won since October - with his stoppage-time header sailing over the bar.
