Matt Harrold slides in to score the winning goal for Crawley

Crawley extended their fine home record with a narrow win over Cambridge.

Matt Harrold's fifth goal of the season proved to be the decisive moment as he fired in from close range after a cross from Lee Barnard.

The U's came close to equalising when midfielder Luke Berry rifled an effort off the post from 20 yards.

Crawley held on to make it seven wins out of their last eight home league games, and rise to 13th in League Two, just two points behind Cambridge.

Crawley Town boss Mark Yates told BBC Surrey:

"That's the proudest I have ever been in a team today. I had 11 outfield players training yesterday and two keepers, and I apologised to the boys for the numbers we had.

"It's been a bit of a shambles, but the players haven't moaned and they've got on with working on the 4G pitch across the road. We've worked in the gym and done things a bit differently and they were magnificent today.

"We were better than Cambridge all round today. We just wanted a win today and next week we've got a chance to make that eight out of nine with a tough one at Notts County, and then we will have to address our home form."

Cambridge boss Shaun Derry told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:

"I never felt that we played the conditions intelligently enough. They wanted the win more than us and that's a cause of concern for me because prior to last week, and prior to today, I felt we've really competed all over the pitch.

"Now I'm asking questions, and I'm expecting answers to be delivered in the performances, not just in voice.

"It was a horrible, scrappy game, I don't think anybody enjoyed watching it, but you get so many of them games at this level, and you've got to find a formula to affect the opposition and today we were second best."
