Barrow: Paul Cox only started Jordan Williams because of injuries

Barrow manager Paul Cox says he only started new signing Jordan Williams in their 1-1 draw with Gateshead because his side had too many injuries.

Midfielder Williams only signed from Northwich on Saturday but, with Otis Khan out, went straight into the team.

The 23-year-old then scored an 84th-minute equaliser to secure a point.

"If we didn't have as many injuries, I don't think I would have started him - I would have left him on the bench and bedded him in," said Cox.

"I think the football club have signed a real gem. If he carries on with the standard he's set then he will go on to play at a very high level of football."

Barrow are now 16th in the National League table, without a win in three matches but eight points clear the relegation places.

"When you look at bringing players into the football club then they've got to put pressure on our better players," Cox told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"I want those players to then embrace that and create competition for places and make them more consistent."
