Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 Bolton

Gary Hooper
Gary Hooper scored his fourth goal of the season

Striker Gary Hooper scored twice as Sheffield Wednesday beat troubled bottom club Bolton Wanderers, who had twice come from behind.

Fernando Forestieri put the hosts ahead with a powerful strike but Gary Madine levelled with a close-range shot.

Hooper gave the Owls the lead once more as he latched on to Daniel Pudil's neat cross to shoot past Ben Amos.

David Wheater met Liam Feeney's free-kick to equalise but Hooper scored again to deny the Trotters.

The result means Bolton are now six points from safety at the bottom of the Championship table, while Sheffield Wednesday lie two points outside the play-off place in seventh.

The visitors face a winding-up petition hearing on Monday and are trying to sell players in an attempt to avoid going into administration.

Wednesday opened the scoring early on when Forestieri found space in midfield and unleashed a powerful shot from 30 yards that had Amos well beaten.

Bolton levelled minutes later when Liam Trotter's close-range shot deflected off Madine and into the net.

Wanderers started the second half well and almost took the lead when Wellington Silva cut inside to tee up Feeney but Joe Wildsmith gathered his effort.

The hosts went ahead again when Hooper beat the Bolton backline to meet Pudil's cross and tap home.

Wheater equalised but Hooper linked up with Ross Wallace's cross to seal a win for the hosts.

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvahal:

"I'm very happy about the victory because it wasn't easy for us. We followed the melody of the opponents in the first half but then we put different music on the pitch. In the second half we introduced a little rock.

"When you open the team, you take risks and both teams had chances. It was a very tough game and the important thing was the three points.

"I am happy with all the players and we are doing very well. We're playing attacking football and our fans are very happy with the football we are playing. I know Gary Hooper very well and he's doing well but I think he can do even better in the future."

Bolton Wanderers manager Neil Lennon:

"I thought we were excellent and I didn't think we deserved to lose. In the second half we had two or three great chances to win the game. I thought Gary Madine was outstanding and I need more performances like that from him.

"We were playing against a team who've invested a lot and I was very encouraged by the performance.

"There's a lot of speculation surrounding a lot of our players and it's not an ideal situation but we have to raise money soon to keep the club going.
