Jayson Leutwiler: Shrewsbury want to keep first-choice keeper

Shrewsbury Town have opened negotiations over a new contract with Jayson Leutwiler in the hope of keeping hold of their first-choice goalkeeper.

The 26-year-old Swiss has missed Town's last seven games since coming off with a broken nose and concussion in the FA Cup tie at Grimsby on 7 December.

It has not stopped speculation about Leutwiler moving in the January window - but there have been no bids.

And Shrewsbury boss Micky Mellon says they want to 'keep their best players'.

"It's difficult to build a team when you look at the situations we had with Ryan Woods and players like that," Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"You never stand in their way and they go for good money. But we want to keep our best players and Jayson is one of our best players."

Leutwiler's present deal expires in the summer, after which Shrewsbury would not be entitled to any fee.

Having missed a month's action, during which former England Under-18s keeper Calum Burton has deputised on the bench, Leutwiler is back to full fitness, but is again expected to be kept out of the side by Mark Halstead for Saturday's home game with Barnsley.

Despite the tonic of knocking Cardiff City out of the FA Cup last weekend and setting up a home tie with Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, Shrewsbury are still in relegation danger in League One.

They are just one point clear of trouble, having won just once in seven league games, going into the meeting with Mellon's former club.

Micky Mellon's manic month at the Meadow

Micky Mellon is already the busiest boss in the country in this January window, having made five signings, as well as letting four players go.

He says that the Town will be active again before the window closes on 2 February - but has dismissed speculation linking him with Bristol City's Egyptian defender Adam El-Abd.

Shrewsbury's January deals so far:

In: Jack Grimmer (Fulham - loan), Andy Mangan (Tranmere Rovers), Kyle Vassell (Peterbough - loan), Richie Wellens (Doncaster Rovers), James Wallace (Sheffield United).

Out: James Collins (Northampton - loan), Tyrone Barnett (Southend - loan), Liam Lawrence (Bristol Rovers), Mark Ellis (Carlisle United).
