Kyle Vassell and Richie Wellens sign for Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury will be Kyle Vassell's 14th different club since starting his career at Brentford in 2010

League One strugglers Shrewsbury Town have taken their tally of January transfer window signings to four by recruiting young striker Kyle Vassell and veteran midfielder Richie Wellens.

Vassell, 22, has been loaned for the rest of the season by Peterborough.

Wellens, 35, has signed an 18-month deal after his release by Doncaster.

They follow the return to the club of striker Andy Mangan, who has returned to Shropshire from Tranmere Rovers, and on-loan Fulham defender Jack Grimmer.

Vassell joined Posh from non-league Bishop's Stortford in November 2013. He has scored just one league goal in 16 months, but he did net three times on loan for Dagenham & Redbridge in their run to to Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie at Everton.

Manchester-born Wellens had been expected to join Shrewsbury's League One rivals Oldham Athletic, where he had been on loan.

He has made 686 appearances in a career that began on Manchester United's books and has since taken in Blackpool, Oldham (twice), Doncaster (twice), Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

Micky Mellon's manic January

Shrewsbury boss Micky Mellon has so far offloaded four players during this busy January transfer window.

Striker Tyrone Barnett has joined fellow League One side Southend United, while top scorer James Collins has been loaned to League Two promotion challengers Northampton Town.

Captain Liam Lawrence has also dropped down a level to join Bristol Rovers, while defender Mark Ellis has completed his move to another League Two side, Carlisle United.
