Shrewsbury Town 0-3 Barnsley

Shrewsbury Town slipped into the League One relegation zone after a comprehensive home defeat by Barnsley.

Sam Winnall put the visitors ahead when he raced onto a long clearance and fired powerfully past Mark Halstead.

Former Shrewsbury loan striker Winnall scored his 12th goal of the season when he ran on to fire in from 20 yards.

Andy Mangan's penalty was kept out by Barnsley keeper Adam Davies before Alfie Mawson scored after his initial header from a corner was blocked.

Winnall failed to score in four appearances when he was loaned to Shrewsbury from his first club Wolves in September 2012.

But he has now scored five goals in improving Barnsley's run of three successive League One victories. That has seen Lee Johnson's side climb to 17th, four points clear of 21st-placed Shrewsbury.

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon told BBC Shropshire:

"Everything we did at Cardiff last week we didn't do. We didn't keep the ball, we weren't aggressive enough and we gave it away far too cheaply.

"It's disappointing to concede when playing with three centre-backs. We have to get the basics right. There is disappointment with the fans and they wanted to see a good performance.

"We missed a penalty when it could have given us a lift - and we never got going. You have to keep working hard."
