The Spiders dominated the first half with a John Carter header and Paul Woods shot both rattling the crossbar.
Jordan Millar saved Woods' penalty and Carter put the rebound wide, and they were punished when Gary Fraser's deflected shot put Montrose ahead.
Carter levelled before Montrose had Terry Masson sent off, and Scott Gibson's header hit the crossbar.
