Gary Hooper scored two early second-half goals as Sheffield Wednesday moved into the Championship play-off places with victory over Yorkshire rivals Leeds United at Hillsborough.

Hooper, on loan from Norwich, prodded home just 69 seconds after the restart.

The striker added another three minutes later when Leeds goalkeeper Marco Silvestri could not hold Fernando Forestieri's initial shot.

Leeds saw Liam Cooper's goal disallowed after a substitution was not completed.

The incident, 12 minutes from time, sparked fury in the visiting technical area as Forestieri was ruled not to have left the pitch when Cooper bundled in.

Referee Anthony Taylor initially allowed the goal, before changing his mind after consulting with the other match officials.

Former Celtic striker Hooper's double means he has now scored four goals in his last two games having found the net twice in the Owls' 3-2 win over Bolton on Tuesday.

However, he is unlikely to score an easier brace, with his first a tap in from a matter of inches after a goalmouth scramble, followed by a cool finish from six yards.

The victory for Carlos Carvalhal's side was just their second in the last eight meetings between the two sides, but deserved following a superior showing for the majority of the second half.

It means they have now won five of their last six Championship games and knock Ipswich out of the top six.

Leeds, who had only failed to score in just two of their last 17 trips to Hillsborough before this game, are now winless in five league matches.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal on Leeds' disallowed goal:

"To me it's very clear. The fourth referee showed a strong personality.

"My view is very clear that he must cancel that goal because the game has stopped at that moment to do the substitution."

Leeds United boss Steve Evans on Liam Cooper's ruled-out strike:

"I've been into see Anthony and he said by law he's got it right because it should be disallowed.

"I've seen many times where the referee stops it for a substitution, someone's taking for too long and he restarts play, but I've never seen somebody going back to restart play again, ever.

"You cannot make a mistake of that magnitude in a game which means so much to both sets of supporters."
