Bristol City 0-1 West Bromwich Albion

Salomon Rondon scored the only goal as West Bromwich Albion overcame a stubborn Bristol City in a replay to reach the FA Cup fourth round.

The Baggies' record signing finished coolly from close range after chesting down a Craig Dawson cross in the box.

It was the one moment of quality during a game in which both sides wasted decent scoring opportunities

Tony Pulis' Premier League side will now face League One side Peterborough United at The Hawthorns in round four.

Albion will be favourites to win that match, as they were for both third-round games, although they will hope for an easier contest than the one given to them over 180 minutes by City.

It was only a 90th-minute James Morrison goal in the original tie that earned the Baggies a replay and this game was similarly closely contested.

Rondon to the rescue

Pulis made three changes from the side that lost 3-0 at Southampton in the Premier League at the weekend.

Striker Rondon was one of that recalled trio and the 26-year-old gave a glimpse of why Pulis parted with a club record £12m to bring him to the club with a neatly taken finish in the 52nd minute.

It was their only shot on target in the game, but they made it count.

Prior to that, the Baggies had spurned two good chances as Craig Gardner fired a yard wide from the edge of the box and an unmarked Gareth McAuley headed over following another Gardner shot from range.

After taking the lead, though, Albion's greater experience and expertise came to the fore as they managed the game superbly to a victorious conclusion.

City waste their opportunity

Wes Burns fires wide
Wes Burns scored his first of the season against Middlesbrough on Saturday but failed to add to it on Tuesday

Bristol City are struggling in the bottom three of the Championship but boosted their survival hopes and confidence by completing a double over high-flying Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Buoyed by that 1-0 win, City, who made five changes of their own, began well on Tuesday but spurned arguably the chance of the half when Wes Burns - the match-winner against Boro - put a shot past the far post from an angle in the box when he had only keeper Ben Foster to beat.

Luke Freeman also curled a free-kick just wide for the home side, who were noticeably affected by Rondon's goal and subsequently struggled to threaten.

Aaron Wilbraham headed over under pressure before, in the closing stages, Burns saw an effort blocked, but it was too little too late as West Brom saw out a deserved win.

What the managers said

West Bromwich Albion head coach Tony Pulis: "In the last 15 minutes or so they had a few opportunities but generally I though we controlled the game really.

"We knew it was going to be difficult and it was difficult, but the best team won and deserved to win. "

Bristol City manager John Pemberton, on BT Sport: "I've just said to the lads if you want to look at how to get out of where we are, take a leaf out of their book.

"They were really disciplined and organised. They did a real professional job with us. We can't argue with the result - West Brom were excellent tonight."

What next?

Bristol City travel to Leeds for a Championship fixture on Saturday, while West Brom are back in Premier League action at home against bottom club Aston Villa on the same day.
