Bury win 4-2 on penalties

Bradford City 0-0 Bury (2-4 pens)

Ten-man Bury beat Bradford after a penalty shootout in which Jacob Mellis scored the winning spot-kick.

Both sides failed to take good chances before the visitors had defender Nathan Cameron dismissed after 40 minutes.

A Josh Morris strike hit the post for the hosts but the game went into extra time, during which a shot from Bury's Danny Pugh also struck the woodwork.

In the shootout, Steve Davies and Devante Cole missed for Bradford as Bury progressed to face Hull.

Mellis got his side's winner but keeper Ian Lawlor was the hero as he made some crucial saves during the game against a Bradford side who produced one of the great FA Cup results last season when they beat Chelsea.

Lawlor kept out a James Meredith effort in a frantic finale before saving the spot-kicks of Davies and Cole to set up a fourth-round tie at home to Championship side Hull.

Bradford boss Phil Parkinson: "Against 10 men it is difficult, it kind of changed the mood, the man getting sent off.

"We've got to make sure we don't wear this disappointment too heavily. The more you make of it, the worse it gets. We've just got to stay positive.

"Working on the training ground isn't a bad thing to do. Hopefully we will take a bigger percentage of chances we get. That percentage has to go up for us to start winning games comfortably."

Bury manager David Flitcroft: "It was a performance full of character. We had to sit deep, look to counter, and grab something. Once we got to the last half hour I felt I could sniff penalties.

"They stood firm - character, resilience, everything you want from a team."
