Wigan Athletic 3-0 Port Vale

Will Grigg
Wigan striker Will Grigg has now scored 13 goals in all competitions this season

A Will Grigg hat-trick helped promotion-chasing Wigan to see off League One play-off hopefuls Port Vale.

Wigan took an early lead when Yanic Wildschut's cross-shot was turned into the net by Grigg.

The Latics' second came from Grigg penalty's after Vale defender Ryan McGivern had been sent off for fouling the striker in the box.

Grigg secured his hat-trick in the 69th minute when he slotted past Vale goalkeeper Jak Alnwick.

Gary Caldwell's Latics are now within five points of top spot, while Vale drop a place to 11th.

Meanwhile, Vale have announced that defender Aziz Deen-Conteh has left the club by mutual consent.

The former Chelsea and England Under-19 youngster has not made an appearance since signing on a two-and-half-year deal in November 2014.

Caldwell on Wigan v Port Vale

"It was excellent, right from the first minute. We had a good tempo to our play.

"We had good attacking intent. We scored three goals, we could have scored more.

"If there is a negative from a 3-0 victory, it's that it probably should have been more than that."

Port Vale manager Rob Page told BBC Radio Stoke:

"It is a bit of a wake-up call really. We didn't deserve anything. We were well below par. But it has been a good leveller for us to come and see where we're at.

"When you come to a place like Wigan, and play like we did first half, and give the ball away too cheaply, then there is only going to be one outcome.

"You don't need to give teams like Wigan a helping hand, and we certainly did that. On too many occasions we gave the ball away."
