Match ends, York City 2, Stevenage 1.
York City beat Teddy Sheringham's Stevenage to record only their fourth League Two win of the season and move back within three points of safety.
City are still bottom of the Football League despite substitute Danny Galbraith's stoppage-time strike.
But they are now on the up after losing just twice in the last six matches.
On-loan Cambridge midfielder Keith Keane had fired in from 30 yards on 78 minutes to cancel out Kenny McEvoy's first-half opener for City.
Making only his third Stevenage appearance, Keane looked to have earned a point until Galbraith got on the ball 40 yards out, strode to the edge of the penalty box and fired a low shot in off keeper Chris Day's right post.
York City manager Jackie McNamara told BBC Radio York:
"We thoroughly deserved to win. It feels good. It was an important win. We emphasised that yesterday before the game. It was a great time to score and a fantastic finish for Danny to win it.
"I'd like to have had it tied up a lot earlier in the game but, if we hadn't won, it would have been a sore one to take."
Stevenage manager Teddy Sheringham told BBC Three Counties Radio:
"We didn't deserve that result against us. York didn't really trouble us in any way. We gifted them a goal in the first half and, after we got our equaliser, it felt like there was only going to be one winner.
"It's like a dagger through the heart. It's not funny when we end up on the wrong end of these games. I feel the same pain that the fans do. We really didn't look like losing, but switching off in the last few minutes changes all of that.
"I have made the players aware these are must-win games, or at least not-losses. We have enough experience out there on the pitch to not make little mistakes, They know players can't cut through the middle like that."
