The hosts had the better of the first-half chances, with Sam Russell doing well to save Dan Pilkington's strike.
Nick Anderton fired over for Barrow, while Gateshead forward CJ Hamilton's shot tested Bluebirds goalkeeper Joel Dixon before half-time.
The Heed pressed for a winner in the second half, but struggled to get shots on goal as Barrow held on for a point.
