Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand greeted Nemanja Vidic's retirement by describing the Serb as his favourite defender to play alongside. On his Facebook page, Ferdinand called Vidic a "complete and great defender" but said United players doubted his ability when he first joined the club.

Brazil forward Pato, who has joined Chelsea on loan from Corinthians, could not hide his excitement at the prospect of playing for the Blues. In a post on Instagram, he wrote: "Today I'm really happy to become a player of this huge and special club. I never gave up on my dream of coming back to play in Europe and now Chelsea is helping me to make this dream come true. Thanks a lot for all the support of my family, Chelsea team and the fans. Today is a happy day."
