Nathan Austin had a shot cleared off the line before he headed home Steven Campbell's pinpoint cross in first-half stoppage time.
Austin's delivery gave Jamie Insall an easy tap-in to double the hosts' lead.
Arbroath substitute Keiran Stewart found the net with a stunning long-range strike two minutes from time but East Fife held on.
