670. wolf359PG overrated? Best footballer I had seen since George Best & if not for the injuries in his prime years may have even got better Not seen anything close to him recentlyScholes was good but never used correctly by England as we had to play Gerrard & Lampard centrally for some unknown reason a pairing that never worked
@685In Brazil, we scored the sum total of 2 goals - Rooney got one and a brilliant assist for Sturridge against Italy. In the QLFs, he scored 8 in 10 games - Yes, his form has dipped in a poorly led MU saga this year, but for England his recent record is excellent. Not sure why we have this "hatred" against our best players, it happenned with Rio F, our best defender since Bobby Moore.
@677. BaggiosPonytailIt looks a bit experimental at times but this is the best I have seen England play for a very long time. The Netherlands game was rubbish and the last World Cup was a disaster but other games since the World Cup have been a real eye opener. Really good from England. It looks different in some way.
I hope RH doesn't make the same mistake as at the last World Cup where he juggles around the team to accommodate Rooney, he was useless then and I don't see much improvement to come
Gazza was one of the best players we have ever had . that goal v Scotland in the euros will long live in the memory, all class and a great character.
Gazza overrated? Anyone who knows anything about football knows what a class footballer Gazza was. Look at the youtube clips. It's pure idiocy or blind prejudice to say anything else. I am assuming the comment was based on ignorance having never seen him live or on tv.
My team to start..... HartRose Stones Smalling Clyne. Dier Lallana Ali Sterling Rooney. KaneOur best side I think....
Honestly I have tried to pick a side, but as I start with 2 keepers and then 5 centre backs its almost impossible to choose the other 4...any tips? I see some very studied viewpoints here...many nutters, but I try to would listen .....x
All this fuss for just over a week of football, when we lose to Wales and fail to beat to beat Slovakia and Russia.
Sponsors will dictate that Rooney starts
@676 Ice Cold DrinkYeah all of the full backs seem to have a lot of pace which can get them out of trouble but they often get into trouble because they don't sense the danger or if they do they don't care. I don't think it makes much difference who we pick (Bertrand is probably our most 'reliable' back) but Hodgson/Neville need to try to instil some discipline.
673. BaggiosPonytailThere is a clear shortage of good English CBs. Clyne and Rose seem to be better attacking than they are defending. I suppose it's the modern way of playing, score first, defend last.
@670Wow, you're running rings around yourself - how many goes does it take to express the view that Gazza was over-rated?Fiercely disagree - he was "near genious" until that ill fated tackle, quite simply, the best british player of his generation. I wish that "football" would look after him, he gave us all so much, he is entitled to something in return.
When I was young I went to one of Gazza's training sessions at Wembley in 92. He was teaching the youngsters for a week for charity.I can honestly say I have never seen anything like it. His skill set was ridiculous and the power at which he kicked the ball was mental. Anyone who does not rate him is an idiot and really don't know much about football. In his day he was world class.
@671 Ice Cold DrinkYeah it's basically following a similar approach to Leicester. Let the opposition have the ball and break quickly. Alli has something special, there is pace in abundance (as long as we don't pick Milner!) and Kane and Vardy get into dangerous positions and can finish. Someone just needs to get the defence drilled. Picking a consistent back 4 would be a good start!
@670Haha yeah ok, next you will be saying Messi and Zidane were/are overated Your obviously a young fan that never actually seen football in that eraI watched Gazza live many times, and he was the most gifted footballer england have had for 50 years. If england had 11 Gazza's in terms of ability they would be world and european champions over and over
@667 BaggiosPonytailAn easy and simple way of playing the game, but a great way of playing the game when you look at the England squad. Stones is still very young and has a lot to learn, but he isn't the quickest. He tends to hold onto the ball for to long which is asking for trouble really.@ 668 Harry77Very slow, but a great footballing brain.
