Scottish League Two play-off: Edinburgh City 1-1 East Stirlingshire

The battle for a place in Scottish League Two next season remains in the balance after Edinburgh City and East Stirlingshire drew the first leg.

The Lowland league champions took the lead when Douglas Gair fired home a penalty when Kristopher Faulds handled inside his own box at Meadowbank.

Shire equalised just before the break when the home defence failed to clear and Maxwell Wright hammered home.

City defender Joe Mbu and Shire's Reece Donaldson were then sent off.

Shire have 90 minutes to prolong their 61-year stay in Scotland's senior leagues, while the visitors will be aiming to enter them for the first time since adopting the name in 1986.

Until then, the club founded in 1966 had been called Postal United.

The previous Edinburgh City were founded in 1928 and joined the Scottish Football League as an amateur club but left in 1949.

Shire, who share Ochilview Park with former neighbours Stenhousemuir after selling their ground in Falkirk, were founded in 1881 and first played in the Scottish Football League in 1900.

After a short spell out of the top leagues after the Second World War, they returned in 1955.

Craig Tully's side, who have now won only once in their last 11 outings, were consigned to the play-offs after finishing bottom of League Two, seven points adrift of Arbroath.

Gary Jardine's hosts, who defeated Highland League champions Cove Rangers 3-1 on aggregate in their pyramid play-off, have now gone 20 games without defeat.

Both Mbu and Donaldson will miss next Saturday's second-leg at Ochilview Park after being shown straight red cards from referee Gavin Duncan.

Mbu was first for an early bath when he clashed off the ball with Shire substitute David Mckenna.

Then, in stoppage time, Donaldson was shown his red card after a kick out on City goalscorer Gair.
