Walters is carrying an Achilles injury so it is very unlikely he will start against Belgium. The problem now is who else can fill his shoes - Robbie Keane is not that good at winning the ball or holding it up. I fear that yesterday's result will prove costly - this was a game they should have won.
106. James_AutarWalters barely made the game. It was a fitness issue. "you can't sit back on 1-0"Really!? 1988 Ireland 1 England 0; first Irish Euro game. Houghton scores after 6 minutes.1994 Ireland 1 Italy 0. 1994 World Cup, Giants Stadium. Houghton scores after 11 minutes.Like to revise that??
Yet another Manager basically lost 2 points for his team. After Hodgson's dismal defensive substitutions against Russia, Martin O'Neil stupidly took off John Walters; Ireland lost the initiative for the first time in the game, and the Swedes equalized. They did not look like scoring before then. You can't sit back on 1-0.Ibrahimovich was mostly insignificant. Sweden poor.
EPL won by a team with very little flair, Chelsea flopped with the likes of hazard hiding for most of season while pocketing a nice few quid . Don't fool yourselves about what wins and what doesn't, a lot of over rated players out there and a lot of hard working players, I know the ones of like to have in my team. Proud of irish performance last night, they gave it everything.
Keane, come on son, its the Euros, not an audition for The Revenant.
Ireland were unlucky but just like England they sat back and conceded a goal to a weak team, however I would rate Sweden better then Russia so maybe not a bad result.

Poor Ciaran Clark - must have thought that, after seeing Villa ridiculed this season, things couldn't get any worse - think again.Still .... you know what they say Some things in life are badThey can really make you madOther things just make you swear and curse. When you're chewing on life's gristleDon't grumble, give a whistleAnd this'll help things turn out for the best...
As a NI fan I have never had any time for the ROI.However I thought their fans singing "Stand up for the Ulstermen" on the 24th minute of this match for young Darren Rodgers, was a perfect gesture. It is exactly what football should be about and I have an awful lot of respect for them for doing it.RIP Darren
96. IhatetheolympicsNever mind investing in security, take the World Cup away from them. The circumstances of them being awarded it in the first place are highly suspect and these latest comments about the violence are a disgrace. What is it about Russia that it seems to try to stir things up as much as possible? Horrible people with a sordid history. Dump them!!!!!
I hope FIFA are investing heavily in security for the World Cup in Russia , some of the comments made by Russians with regard to the violence in France are unbelievable !
94. what_for"all the more sweeter"nuff said!
1990 as a very naive 19yr old i looked forward to a summer of world class football i followed both scotland and roi as well as England and gave my support to all 3 however by the Belgium game it became apparent that the roi fans wanted us to lose tbf the played really well which just made the result against a lacklustre Swedish team all the more sweeter :) COME ON BELGIUM
Ireland did very well in first half, and we got the lead at the start of the 2nd. However, the error was in sitting back rather than trying to kill the game off. We seem to need to score at least two to win a game. We got too deep and let Sweden dominate in the latter stages of the game. Clark cannot be blamed in any way, he had to play the ball, otherwise the Swede behind him would've scored.
This is a blow for Ireland. This is the toughest group by some margin so both teams needed a win in this match knowing Italy and Belgium were next. Ireland should have won based on the performance and having the best chances in the game. Hoolahan's goal was wonderful but Ireland allowed Sweden back in by giving Olsson space down the left and Ibrahimovic to roam. The Belgium game will be intriguing
Quote "They're not in the UK"They're Irish and so they're as closer to us Geographically and Historically than anyone else, you can't compare them to Albania or indeed anyone else. They're our brothers... I'm rooting for them all the way. ( Well, after Wales of course.)
