Torquay United's Sam Chaney must take his upcoming chance to stake a claim for a place in the first team, says manager Kevin Nicholson.

The 20-year-old midfielder has been a substitute in six of his last seven Torquay appearances.

With the Gulls without up to eight players for the trip to Chester, Chaney is set to get a chance to shine

"It's a chance now for him to nail a place down and I've got no doubt he'll take it," Nicholson said.

Chaney was one of the final players to graduate form the club's now closed youth academy, but has not always found chances easy to come by at Plainmoor.

"His first touch is as good as anything I've seen, and how he can manoeuvre a ball is as good as anything I've seen," added Nicholson, who is hoping to bolster his squad with a loan signing before Saturday's trip to Chester.

"If he gets that balance of when to play and when to use his outstanding ability, then we're going to have a real player on our hands."
