Great story...short story maybe. Won't long till we are trawling the lower leagues for veterans and never will be's.
Defoe is best natural finisher England have, even at 34 and having come out of retirement when he left Toronto.Look at the other options.Kane- good at club level but at least with him out of team, someone can take set pieces properly.Sturridge too unreliable.Rashford too early needs to play more for club.Vardy too much of a cheat. So the options are poor.
Defoe deserved his place, long overdue simply because he is not in the top 5 clubs. He played well, sadly let down at times by other players not providing enough of the ball, some of which should not be wearing an England shirt. I see from the BBC's comments on the main page that Shearer has also stepped in questioning why England had to rely on Defoe at 34 years. My suggestion, ignore Shearer.
@120. You seem to be concurring with Alan Shearer and to a degree, i can understand. That said, perhaps Jermaine Defoe should never have been left out of the England squad. He has never stopped scoring goals and i can remember him scoring two goals vs Holland away, for England back in 2009.
Fair play to Defoe. A good pro and he seems a nice bloke too. I guess it's a sad state of affairs that England have so few players to choose from that they have to play a 34 year old whose last cap was over 3 years ago.
I don't understand for the life of me why people think Defoe doesn't belong in this England team. He has singlehandedly kept Sunderland afloat and has a natural instinct for goal scoring. He and Kane should lead the line and Vardy should be used as a supersub later in the game when the opposition defence is tired from dealing with tanks such as Kane and Defoe.
It's a shame Defoe has been in Rooney's shadow for the last 10 or so years, should have played lots more than he has.
The best players should be picked and not just young players.Would Argentina pick an 18 year old over Messi?Portugal pick a 20 year old over Ronaldo?Uruguay pick a 21 year old over Suarez? If you want to win then pick the best players despite their age.Like Vardy-Drogba peaked in his late 20s-should he have been overlooked?Rooney peaked at 16 and we've had to put up with him ever since.Pick on form
Defoe was well prepared for this type of game, it was the equivalent of Sunderland vs Rotherham. You did well Defoe, unlike the rest of the team. Hart again showed his brilliance and putting up a strong case to stay at City.
113. Yes face is straight, thanks for concern. How many shots on target does your striker manage by the hour? And 66% shots/ontarget ratio? I doubt it. And do really think world rankings mean anything? I'm not 'eulogising' about England's performance, but I am supporting them! Why? 'cos I'm English, that's why, and that's what we do for our team, offer support.
Nice to have some players in the squad who don't play for the so-called big clubs. Well done Gareth for having the courage to pick some of these guys
110. Peter AdamsIs your face straight? Seriously? 120th team in world rankings and you're eulogising over two shots on target for an aged striker who can only be a stopgap squad addition. And a friendly testimonial match is no barometer whatsoever to performance. In fact it is embarrassing England failed to score a single goal in a testimonial. It wasn't the goal keepers after all
"a great story" possibly. but it wont be long-lived, and leads to no progression of the england team, or positives for the future of the national club, if none of the youngsters can follow in defoe's footsteps and take over. this is a backwards step, and one does no encourage me to start following england again anytime soon.
Whenhescored I saidtomyself " that's what he does!", and thatis why he would always have been in my squad maybe even when he was in Canada!, The question now is how much has he got left at his age, I believe he has to go to next World Cup as at least a Squad man!, After that then maybe he might retire from international duty with a bit of Respect gained but expect him to be scoring into late 30's.
