Jai Quitongo's goal sealed a victory for Morton against Queen of the South that moved them up to third in the Scottish Championship.

Ross Forbes had opened the scoring for the visitors after 16 minutes, with his first goal of the season.

Morton then doubled their advantage four minutes later when Quitongo found the top corner from 20 yards out.

Queen of the South's Derek Lyle pulled one back a minute later, but Morton held on for the victory.

Morton had a good chance to add a third goal in the 37th minute but Gary Harkins' header hit the woodwork.

Post-match reaction

Morton manager Jim Duffy: "It was an outstanding result for us. It was a very difficult match, both teams went at it. We scored two outstanding goals and in the second half we had to defend and be thankful for our goalkeeper, who pulled off two excellent saves.

"Anybody who doesn't watch [the Championship] doesn't understand how even and how competitive it is. There are mistakes and moments of brilliance. All credit to Queen of the South, they threw everything at us in the second half, but we defended our corners and our goalkeeper was on top form. It was our turn to come away with the three points.

"The second goal was fantastic at any level of football. He's an entertainer, Jai, and there's plenty more to come from him. He's playing with a smile again and we know we have a talent.

"There's not too much between the teams. Of course, teams will eventually find the consistency to take them to the level where they're challenging. All we're trying to do just now is get points on the board, get some belief and confidence and see where that takes us."

Queen of the South manager Gary Naysmith: "I don't think we deserved to lose, a draw would have been a fair result. It comes down to a moment of brilliance from Quitongo and their goalkeeper has made two very good saves in the second half.

"There are things we need to look at, but we started the game as well as we've started any game this season. Morton will feel they did a good job on us, [but] we feel that it's a game we shouldn't have lost.

"It wouldn't surprise me if anybody beat anybody in the other games. I need to look back and think about why [Queens lost] because we started the game confidently and we were the better team in the second half. Credit to Morton, they defended well and their goalkeeper has made saves when he had to."
