Falkirk 0-0 Dundee United

Both sides reached last season's Premiership play-offs but have had a stuttering start to the new campaign

Falkirk produced a goalless performance against Dundee United that took the Bairns' points tally to just three from six games.

It was a weary 90 minutes which produced little to enthral, with United's Paul Quinn departing early with a head knock.

Scott McDonald scraped the Falkirk crossbar and Craig Sibbald rattled United's bar, also with a header.

United hit the woodwork again, Paul McMullan's cross hitting the bar.

Fourth-placed Dundee United miss the chance to go second in the Scottish Championship while Falkirk find themselves second bottom of the division.

The most heated action was a touchline debate between referee John Beaton and Falkirk manager Peter Houston after which the Bairns boss avoided banishment to the stand.

And so the match trudged on peppered with bookings and stray passes.

Quinn was replaced by William Edjenguele and then McDonald carved out the first real effort by nodding off the bar.

The diminutive Sibbald was closer with his attempt but could not put Falkirk ahead.

And when the Tangerines went close again after the break it was a fluke with McMullan's delivery losing its way.

The same could be said of the game as an anxious support of almost 4,000 witnessed no goals.
