Leeds United 3-2 Ipswich Town

Pierre-Michel Lasogga has scored two goals in four appearances for Leeds

Leeds stayed top of the Championship with a thrilling win over Ipswich.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga put the hosts in front with a clinical low finish before David McGoldrick's header levelled for the visitors but Kalvin Phillips quickly made it 2-1.

Town goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski dropped a Pablo Hernandez corner over his own line to stretch the lead.

But home keeper Felix Wiedwald set up a nervy finish when he spilled a cross straight to the feet of Joe Garner.

Thomas Christiansen's side, who beat Premier League Burnley in the EFL Cup in midweek, are level on points with both Cardiff and Wolves but sit top thanks to their superior goal difference.

Bialkowski's howler in the 67th minute looked to have set them up for a comfortable win but Wiedwald's error at other end just four minutes later, the German making a total hash of a routine Dominic Iorfa cross, left them hanging on.

Ipswich were competitive throughout and would have gone in level at the break but for Vurnon Anita's goalline clearance from an Adam Chambers header.

Leeds travel to Cardiff on Tuesday, while Ipswich host struggling Sunderland.

Leeds United head coach Thomas Christiansen said:

"It was an intense game that had everything. We were in front and immediately after the equaliser we managed to score.

"Then in the second half we should keep the result, trying to control the game a little better, but we suffered at the end.

"Ipswich were only two points away from us, so we knew it was a six-point game. The response was good and the result was better."

Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy said:

"I am disappointed with the result. I'm even more disappointed because of how well we played.

"But I thought we were terrific. I thought second half we had one hand on their throat, we just couldn't turn it into another goal.

"Character is always there in abundance, but we showed a lot of quality today. Leeds know they have dodged a bullet there."
