Derby County 1-1 Birmingham City

Sam Winnall
Sam Winnall scored his first goal of the season just a minute after coming off the bench

Birmingham earned caretaker manager Lee Carsley a point at Derby in his first game in charge since the sacking of Harry Redknapp.

Lukas Jutkiewicz put City ahead with his first touch, the substitute glancing a header past Scott Carson.

But Derby levelled within two minutes thanks to another inspired substitution as Sam Winnall finished off Richard Keogh's header across goal.

The Rams could have won it but Tomasz Kuszczak saved from Mason Bennett.

It was an afternoon of reunions at Pride Park as Gary Rowett came up against the club that had sacked him last December, while Carsley returned to the club where he played alongside Rowett from 1995 to 1998.

Despite going into the game on the back of six straight defeats in league and cup, Blues held their own, but David Nugent had the best chance of the first half with a curling effort which Kusczak palmed around the post.

After a quiet first half of just one attempt on target, the game exploded into life as both managers made changes around the hour mark which brought immediate rewards.

And both subs almost provided a winner as Winnall's low drive forced another save from Kusczak, and Jutkiewicz's header found Maxime Colin unmarked, but the defender dragged his shot wide.

The draw ended a run of five straight Championship defeats for Birmingham, who remain 23rd, while Derby have now lost just twice in 22 home matches and are 15th.

Derby manager Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Derby:

"In terms of control of the game we should have had a bit more but control is one thing and you have to turn that control and build up in the final third into good attacking play.

"First half we got into good positions but couldn't find that bit of quality. There was less space today because Birmingham dropped in deep and blocked the game up.

"We had a spell of about 15 minutes when we looked nervous and edgy and perhaps took a safe pass and I was disappointed with that - we needed to take more risks."

Birmingham caretaker manager Lee Carsley said:

"We spoke about being a little more resilient, a bit more compact and trying to nullify the opposition a bit because we knew the quality they have and the firepower available to them.

"We knew that we had to be at our best in terms of shape and possession and I thought we did that quite well. We just need to look now about having a little more quality on the counter and in the final third.

"We've got some really good lads in there, lads that want to do really well and the characteristics of a top player is to reproduce good form week in, week out and that's the next step for them."
