Preston North End 2-2 Sunderland

Aiden McGeady's equaliser secured a draw for Sunderland at his former club Preston in former North End boss Simon Grayson's first return to Deepdale.

George Honeyman slotted past Chris Maxwell to give the visitors the lead.

Josh Harrop levelled matters with a deflected free-kick after the break and Jordan Hugill put the hosts in front with a volley two minutes later.

But McGeady equalised against the club where he spent last season on loan with a 20-yard strike moments later.

Preston are now unbeaten in eight league games while Sunderland, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, have failed to win in nine.

Former Everton winger McGeady, who was booed by the home fans on his first return to Deepdale, ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the home fans after scoring his goal.

Alan Browne went close to putting North End back in front when he struck the post straight from the resulting kick-off.

And James Vaughan almost scored for the Black Cats late on when he headed over from McGeady's cross from eight yards.

Sunderland manager Simon Grayson on McGeady's celebration: "You are allowed to run around any part of the field and celebrate how you want.

"He took the pressure off me to be fair, so I'm quite happy with that. I said to him he looked like Adebayor at City.

"Why shouldn't you celebrate? He was unfairly taunted, I thought, because he was exceptional last year.

"He didn't have a choice to come here, so I thought it was a bit unfair what went off."

Preston manager Alex Neil: "I was too disappointed with conceding to notice Aiden's celebration.

"I saw him run somewhere. I think in football emotions run high.

"We were delighted when we scored. I'll be honest, I don't make too much of it."
