Norwich City 1-2 Derby County

David Nugent scores against Norwich
David Nugent put Derby County ahead in the first minute of injury-time at the end of the first half

Sam Winnall scored a late winner for Derby to end Norwich's eight-match unbeaten run in the Championship.

David Nugent put the visitors ahead with a superbly curled effort, their first shot on goal in the game.

Earlier, Norwich's Marco Stiepermann hit the bar and Josh Murphy had a penalty appeal turned down.

Both sides had a host of chances in a pulsating second-half, with Timm Klose levelling with a header before Winnall pounced on a rebound to win it.

Winnall stuck seven minutes after coming off the bench, latching onto the loose ball after goalkeeper Angus Gunn denied Bradley Johnson, to help Derby clinch a third straight win.

Defeat was Norwich's second in five days after Premier League side Arsenal needed extra time to beat the Canaries in the League Cup, ending their nine-match unbeaten run.

For much of the opening 45 minutes Norwich looked the more potent side, with Christoph Zimmermann denied from close range early on and Stiepermann cannoning a shot off the underside of the bar and off the line.

Norwich then had a penalty shout waved away by referee Peter Bankes, as Scott Carson slid in to tackle Murphy after the winger managed to round the goalkeeper as he tried to shepherd the ball out.

A fine first touch from Nugent from a superb long pass from Richard Keogh, allowed the forward to skip clear of his marker before bending the ball home.

Both Carson and Norwich goalkeeper Gunn made fine saves after the break, with Stiepermann foiled before Klose eventually nodded home the equaliser.

Johnson had the ball in the back of the net for the visitors, only to be flagged offside with less than 15 minutes remaining, but his effort to test Gunn soon led to Winnall sealing the three points.

Norwich City manager Daniel Fark:

"Apart from their goal the boys did everything I had asked of them in the first half.

"It was our third game in six days so it was very important to control the game with our possession and defend strongly. We did that, created some good chances and obviously there was the incident with the goalkeeper as well.

"We fought back well after going behind but towards the end it was one of those games where both sides were creating chances - and they were the ones who got a bit of luck.

"It's disappointing our good run is over - but all we can do now is make sure we start another one."

Derby County boss Gary Rowett:

"That's three wins on the trot now and I was delighted with the performance.

"We played some good football, created plenty of chances and, perhaps most importantly of all, showed a lot of character to come away with all three points."

"The word 'character' hasn't always been used with Derby teams in the past but that was certainly the case this afternoon.

"It was an excellent win - although I still think there is more to come from us."
