Hibernian 2-1 Dundee

By John BarnesBBC Scotland

Simon Murray converted an outstanding Anthony Stokes cross to secure Hibernian's fourth straight victory against Dundee.

The visitors suffered a fifth consecutive defeat, leaving them rooted at the bottom of the Premiership.

Hibs opened the scoring with less than a minute played, Martin Boyle lashing home from long range.

Marcus Haber equalised for Dundee with a header, but the Easter Road side eventually prevailed.

Dundee manager Neil McCann started goalkeeper Elliot Parish ahead of Scott Bain, who was dropped due to an "internal matter", according to McCann. It is understood Bain has refused to pay a club fine after a bust up with his manager at during the Hamilton defeat the previous week.

Hibs held on to third place in the table, and closed the gap on Aberdeen to two points.

The team who began and finished the day propping up the Scottish Premiership table were stunned after only 63 seconds as one of their former players left them chasing the game.

Dundee lost possession 10 yards inside the opposition half and Hibs took full advantage as Boyle ran unchallenged to get himself inside the visitors 18 yard box. He then steadied himself to fire a low shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

Not the start that Parish on his Dundee debut, nor his manager, would have wanted.

Boyle came close with another mazy run as he eluded three challenges before seeing his shot blocked just inside the area. Then a Murray effort was saved on the line by Parish.

After the early setback, Dundee responded and were back on level terms just prior to midway through the first half. Roarie Deacon did well on the right sending over a cross which Haber rose well to head home from five yards.

Dundee defender Kevin Holt then had a shot from the edge of the area deflected over by Hibs defender Paul Hanlon.

Home goalkeeper Ofir Marciano produced a wonder save to deny Dundee the lead early in the second half, when the Hibs goalkeeper dived low to his right to get a strong hand on a Faissal El Bakhtaoui driven shot from 16 yards.

At the other end, substitute Stokes had the ball the net after latching on to a Hanlon delivery, but he was judged to be offside.

We then had a melee in the middle of the pitch involving about a dozen players as tempers flared. It ended with referee John Beaton producing yellow cards for Stokes and Ryan Porteous.

Marciano produced another fine stop to deny El Bakhtaoui from 22 yards while at the other end Parish parried away a Murray shot.

But just after the hour, Hibs regained the lead with an excellent goal. Stokes provided the cross from the left and Murray escaped his marker to volley the home side in front from eight yards.

Hibs were boosted by that goal and came close on a few occasions to extend their margin of victory.

Boyle had an effort flicked clear by the boot of Hendry. Murray the chose the wrong option with a high cross from the right when a low delivery would have setup John McGinn in front of goal.

Hanlon then had a driven shot which flew inches wide of the left hand post. There were to be no more goals at Easter Road, though.
