Every Premier League and Championship team should be *required* to play a minimum number of English Under 21 players. How about they have to clock up at least 3420 first team minutes in league or cup matches during the season (equivalent of 1 player every league game). Should be easy enough to keep track of. Back it with significant points deduction if not met
As a Welshman, can I congratulate England and their coach on a fantastic achievement. It is notable that Steve Cooper spent most of his playing career in the Welsh Premier League. Osian Roberts, Chris Coleman's no 2 also managed in the WPL. It proves you don't need a glamorous background to be a successful coach.England have a bright future, they are relative to where Wales were in 2010 or so.
Fixing what happens after 16 is going to be much harder though - there are lot of competiting interests between clubs, players, the FA, fans etc. People advocate B teams like Germany and Spain but the attendances for the CheckATrade Trophy strongly suggest it won't work in England
[Continued]What the Dutch found is too much competitive football and running around a big pitch tended to stop smalling kids enjoying the game. Parents shouting from the sideline made kids play too conservatively and stopped expressing themselves, so in the end it produced a bunch of strong athletic players, but no vision or flair. Hence more emphasis on friendlies, more skill training
@529This is all happening because the top clubs academies adopted that philosophy years ago, in reaction to the Class of 92 (Man Utd had run that way for years having copied it from Ajax, in the same way Barcelona would go on to do). If anything, the FA are a bit late in forcing through the change, but they had to wait for enough clubs to agree
Well done to the team and everyone connected to them including the Mums & Dads, who encouraged and supported their sons in playing football. I hope it won,t be long before we see these talented youngsters displaying their talents in the PL. However managers will not have the courage to use this talent, as the PL gives £100 million each season to clubs, no club can afford to leave the PL
Why all the hype. You would think we haven't won anything in a long time.
With all the vile and abusive comments aimed towards players that haven two youth World Cups and a European Championship, it make me wonder you treat your own offspring? They're kids! Its people like you that will make the BBC close down the HYS and well all miss out. So if you have nowt positive to say, shut up. Well done England, great job.
As a country, if we are in the right mindset, we have the ability to achieve anything. What holds us back is old boys & their 'we know best' plus negativity from others!Labour (un-patriotic), Tory (screw country for cash)In other sports (Olympics, cycling, cricket, Hockey, Rugby) Eng/GB have come on leaps & bounds.Hard work & finding common ground, England could do something.
