Reading 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

Reading v Sheffield Wednesday
Reading and Sheffield Wednesday both finished in the top six of the Championship last season

Struggling Reading had to settle for a point at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Royals came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half but defender Paul McShane could not direct his header on target.

Lucas Joao forced a good save from home goalkeeper Vito Mannone just after the restart.

Sone Aluko bent an effort just wide of the post and Mo Barrow fired wide when well placed as Wednesday were left hanging on for a draw.

The point extends Carlos Carvalhal's side's unbeaten run to six games, but leaves them six points outside the play-off places.

They nearly came away with an unlikely win when substitute Jordan Rhodes headed narrowly off target in the closing minutes.

Reading, beaten play-off finalists last season, have won just two of nine home games this season and are six points above the relegation zone.

Jaap Stam's men host Barnsley on Tuesday, while the Owls meet Hull City at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Reading manager Jaap Stam:

"I think that we played well and created several opportunities in the first half.

"For the majority of the game, we dominated in how we wanted to play. We always had to be aware of their counter-attack.

"You could see their plans of sitting deep, waiting to win the ball and then knocking it over the top but we defended that well and didn't give anything away."

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal:

"We put out a team that was good and competent. Our plan was to try to block Reading's game in the first half and, in the second half try to win the match.

"We did what we had to do - we blocked Reading's dynamic - and the game was very tactical.

"In the second half, we had our chances in two or three situations. We were more of a threat to them then."
