RobSo you don't have to be the best, just the best of that time, isn't that the same with any competition, the FA Cup isn't won by the best team is it, Its won by the team that can be bothered, ( these days, big teams usually put out weak teams in the Cup ) so its devaluedEuropa league can be won by the elite, is that devaluing the Champions league?
Good to see Kafka12 has got it.
N17You are over complicating it, I presume, to spin it in favour of Tottenham. The fact remains a club needs to prove themselves in the best european competition and win it. Winning the Uefa cup a million times is great but you are not playing the best of europe at that time. Even teams that have dropped in from CL are there because they are not the best of europe at that time.
They asked Brian clough if Arsene wenger was a great manger or not . He said wenger was a good manger but you cannot be a great manger unless and until you win the European cup . They asked him if Wenger could win the European cup . He said he was not sure. I am not sure why wenger is still there. Arsenal decline will continue. Arsenal won yesterday but with one flower, you cannot have spring.
413@ RobThe elite clubs are ending up in the Europa, so does that make the Europa an elite?Clubs finishing 4th can win the Champions League, does that diminish that comp that year? This year a club finishing 6th can win the Champions League, will that still be regarded as a real Champions League in years to come? Its not as black and white as you might think is it?
@N17, You are really hilarious.I'm never seen someone invent a 'worth' system on the fly, for no other reason than to desperately give your team some kind of history and sense of occasion. You're only as good as your last game, how did that go for you?
N17You seem to be reading only what you want and not taking it all on board. Uefa cup is not even close to winning the champions league/european cup even in the 80s. The criteria has changed for both in the last 30 years or so but level of competition has not in the whole. To be Elite you have to win the TOP competition not the cup for dropouts or teams finishing 2nd or 3rd etc in 80s.
All I am saying isyou don't have to be your country's title winner to win the champions leagueand the Europa League can be won by a League winnerTherefor the lines are blurred which makes it very difficult to prioritise the 2 main competitionsscenarioChelsea are champions but end up winning the Europa, the 2 comps are now heavily linked
@N17Hellfire, if you can't or won't actually understand what is being written then this is beyond pointless.Anyway, that's more than enough for me, got work in the morning. Now I know you're dreading the banter from Arsenal fans in school tomorrow but I implore you, it'll be worth it in the long run. In a few years you might actually be able to present a cogent point.
409@ BolivarSo you agree your not objective, fare enough mate, whatever lights you wick
@ N17You really need to engage those critical faculties and actually read and understand what other people type.I'm not giving Spurs a hard time really, the vast majority of clubs haven't won the big one.You get a hard time because you spout drivel and for whatever the reason I feel the need to correct you.You could be a fan of almost anyone for all the difference it makes to me.
406@BolivarJust go back and read your own comments, objective you are not my friendRobThe Europa League, today you can win your domestic League and not make the knockout stages of the Champions League and end up in the Europa, you could end up winning the Europa ( not sure if this has ever been achieved) but it's feasible, the lines are blurred Rob, that why its difficult to meritize
403@ Lanesra71I have seen it, but not sure what it is, in the austerity era after the war maybe travel was limited and Norwich was as far as the could travel, I really don't knowRobSo you agree, the Champions are not the Champions, a bit like the old UEFA cup then, where the 4th place represented the country, so we agree, that the old Uefa cup was almost the same as the Champions league,
@ N17I'm not an Arsenal fan, so I am able to remain objective. My club have never even played a European fixture so no delusions of grandeur here.I actually quite like Spurs as a club, but your arguments hold no water. Just grow up a little bit and have some humility.
A UEFA Cup from the 70s and 80s is worth more than a Europa League trophy just from the fact that only the Champions didn't enter it - you had 2nd to 4th in it - unlike now were the 5th place team (4th in some) and cup winners go into it. Liverpool played Barca in the semi in 1976.In the end the European Cup and CL is the supreme prize for club football. If you haven't won it you are nowhere!
N17 True. I agree the champions league has watered down the competition but to win it you still have to play the best of europe. But once won you are forever eating at the top table as an Elite club. winning Uefa cup 2, 3 or 4 times doesnt compare otherwise I suppose Sevilla would be regarded as an Elite club.
N17This is from your honours list in the official website. Don’t suppose time will ever erase this either...Norwich Hospital Charity Cup Winners: 1946/1947, 1949/1950 (joint)
400@BolivarReally, that's an interesting point of view, many times on here Goons have told me they wouldn't swap any of their domestic titles for Spurs European titles, seems there is some discord among the Goons about this, perhaps you ought to have a word with your pals before you make such dogmatic statements
398@ robYou don't have to be your countries elite club to be in it Rob, We have 5 clubs representing us this year, they haven't all won the title this year have they? thats why you can't meritize the titles Rob, If you had to be a title winner to be in it then you have an argument
