Norwich City 3-1 Sheffield Wednesday

James Maddison
James Maddison's goal was his fifth in the Championship so far this season

Norwich City fought back to earn their first home win since 9 September and extend lacklustre Sheffield Wednesday's winless streak to five league games.

The Owls led when Jordan Rhodes nodded in but the Canaries then edged the rest of a relatively subdued first half.

James Maddison's close-range finish on the rebound and Timm Klose's powerful header turned the match around.

Nelson Oliveira added a third from the penalty spot in stoppage time after Barry Bannan slid in on Harrison Reed.

Both sides remain in the Championship's bottom half, with Wednesday falling further behind their play-off rivals.

At the break, Daniel Farke's Norwich had looked set to extend their winless home run to eight games and their winless league run anywhere to nine games in all competitions, after Rhodes' third league goal of the season.

But the hosts deservedly finished on top after a much-improved second-half display, while the Owls struggled to create enough clear-cut chances.

While training 1-0, Norwich had gone close through Oliveira, but he slotted just wide from close range, before being denied by two fine Keiren Westwood saves.

After Maddison's well-struck leveller had started the comeback, Carlos Carvalhal's side rarely looked likely to improve their away record of just one win since 19 August.

Norwich boss Daniel Farke:

"For me it was a big relief because it has been a long time since we won at Carrow Road.

"It can be tough for everyone when you are on a run like that but I thought it was a good performance today and the win was well deserved. It is also the first time we have scored three times in the league this season so that is also pleasing.

"I actually thought we had the better chances in the first half but we didn't take them and they got the goal.

"I thought the second half was brilliant. There was a lot of pressure on the players but they showed their character by turning the game round and getting a really good result."

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal:

"The moment of the game was their first goal - that changed everything.

"When you are winning you should never get caught on the counter-attack but that is what happened. The players had shown a lot of quality in the first half but they compromised everything in that moment. As a manager it is not something you want to see.

"The instructions at half-time were to stay solid and go looking for a second goal but we allowed them to score on the break and that was very disappointing. The game was then well balanced and they scored from a corner but the first goal was the key."
