Toronto beat Seattle to win MLS Cup

Jozy Altidore
Jozy Altidore has scored 17 goals in 31 games this season in the MLS and play-offs

Former Hull and Sunderland striker Jozy Altidore scored as Toronto became the first Canadian team to win the MLS Cup, beating Seattle Sounders in the final.

Toronto, who lost to Seattle on penalties in last year's final, went in front deservedly when Altidore latched on to Sebastian Giovinco's through ball and clipped a shot over Stefan Frei.

Victor Vazquez added an injury-time second from close range.

Frei had earlier denied a host of players, including Michael Bradley.

Toronto become the first MLS team to win a domestic treble. Greg Vanney's side also won this year's Supporters' Shield - for finishing top of the MLS table - and the Canadian Championship, their domestic cup.

Seattle - aiming to become only the fourth team to retain the MLS Cup - came into the game on the back of six clean sheets and looked to frustrate the hosts in the final.

Frei made good saves to deny Jonathan Osorio, Giovinco, Marco Delgado and Víctor Vazquez in the first half.

And Toronto - who secured a record 69 points in an MLS season - continued to push after the break.

Swiss keeper Frei, a former Toronto player, saved Bradley's powerful 25-yard strike, an Altidore header and a Giovinco shot - before he was finally beaten.

It was Altidore who found the way through, although there were claims he was offside when Giovinco played his pass forward.

Seattle - with former Fulham and Tottenham player Clint Dempsey in their team - offered little going forward and only had two shots on target.

They did push for an equaliser later on, and Vazquez scrambled TFC's second into an empty net, after Armando Cooper's shot hit the post.
