Bury striker Jermaine Beckford will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on a knee injury.

The 34-year-old joined the Shakers, who are bottom of League One, in the summer after his release from Championship club Preston North End.

Beckford has scored eight goals in 16 appearances but has not played since their defeat by Doncaster in October.

"It's a massive blow. He is key to this football club. He's our top scorer and talisman," boss Chris Lucketti said.

"He travelled and trained with us all last week and was in contention up until Friday but he had a reaction to his knee and from that reaction he's been to see the surgeon on Monday and went in to surgery," Lucketti added to BBC Radio Manchester.

"We need to improve certain areas and with the loss of Jermaine that is now an area we will look to try and improve [in January]."
