Sheffield Wednesday 0-3 Burton Albion

Burton
Burton players celebrate Lloyd Dyer giving them a 2-0 lead at Hillsborough

Burton recorded their third successive away win at the expense of managerless Sheffield Wednesday.

The visitors missed a great chance to open the scoring when Owls goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith saved Lucas Akins' penalty in the eighth minute.

Tom Flanagan gave the Brewers the lead when he broke through some weak tackles before finishing well.

Lloyd Dyer raced clear to slot home and Tom Naylor tapped in an Akins cross to wrap up the victory after the break.

Despite recording a third win in five games, Nigel Clough's side remain in the bottom three after Bolton and Barnsley also registered victories.

Burton's winning margin could have been even greater had Akins scored from the spot after Jacob Butterfield fouled Will Miller in the area.

However, well-taken goals by Flanagan and Dyer were complemented by Naylor's third strike in four games as the Brewers cruised to a win that consigned the Owls to a third successive home loss.

Burton are now level on points with 21st-placed Hull City, while Wednesday are 16th and six points above the relegation zone.

Sheffield Wednesday caretaker Lee Bullen told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I'm 100% embarrassed by that performance. The goals we lost you wouldn't see in a school playground. The first goal is a joke. For someone to waltz 50 yards with the ball, through four or five players without anyone laying a glove on him is embarrassing.

"We said at half-time that they would sit deep and look to hit us on the counter so we had to keep the backdoor shut and less than five minutes into the second half we were 2-0 down.

"The players have let themselves so far down this season and I am absolutely gutted to be sitting here and speaking this way about these players."

Burton boss Nigel Clough told BBC Radio Derby:

"It was a magnificent performance. The last five or six games have been wonderful performances and we could have had even more points.

"It's our best away performance this season. We took advantage of their injuries and we were clinical.

"We were still animated to not concede at the end because the back five deserved a clean sheet today.

"I thought our shape was much better today and we were a threat on the break. We've got to keep it going now."
