Burton Albion 1-3 Reading

Darren Bent in action for Burton
Darren Bent made his Burton debut following his loan move from Derby

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson scored twice for Reading to leave Burton rooted to the foot of the Championship.

Lucas Akins converted a penalty for the home side, but Bodvarsson scored one in each half and Chris Gunter added a spectacular second to give the Royals their first win in nine.

Burton gave a debut to Darren Bent but he was taken off just after the hour.

The win sees Reading stay in 18th place, but leaves Burton with just one point at home from their past 11 games.

Reading took the lead on 20 minutes when Modou Barrow's cross was laid back by Leandro Bacuna for Icelander Bodvarsson to net his seventh of the season.

The home side were given hope just after half-time when Martin Samuelsen was fouled in the area by Dave Edwards and Akins put away the spot kick.

But Gunter's curling left-foot shot from the edge of the area and Bodvarsson's second of the night from Barrow's cross sealed the win for Jaap Stam's side.

On Saturday, Reading host Millwall (15:00 GMT), while Burton go to Aston Villa at the same time.

Burton boss Nigel Clough told BBC Radio Derby:

"We can't keep the ball out of our net, which has been the same reason for all of our defeats.

"We couldn't keep the ball on the edge of our penalty area for the first goal, Lucas Akins could have done his job on the edge of the penalty area for the second one.

"The discussions with the players have been brief. It's simple: don't do your jobs and we lose football matches."

Reading manager Jaap Stam told BBC Radio Berkshire:

"Everybody knew what we needed to do tonight, which wasn't easy against a team who needed the points as well.

"I think we did well throughout the team, we played well and created opportunities, scoring a couple of good goals.

"We knew in this game we needed to bring a certain level of physicality and we did, which was quite important."
