Chesterfield 1-2 Wycombe Wanderers

Gareth Ainsworth
Gareth Ainsworth, appointed in 2012, has guided Wycombe back into the third tier

Wycombe Wanderers sealed promotion to League One after coming from behind to win at relegated Chesterfield.

The Chairboys' victory at the Proact Stadium, coupled with defeats for Notts County and Exeter, secured the final League Two automatic promotion place.

Michael Harriman's own goal midway through the first half had given Chesterfield a surprise lead.

But Nathan Tyson bundled in for 1-1 before Dominic Gape's first goal of the season completed the turnaround.

Ainsworth patience pays off with promotion

Promotion will end the Chairboys' six-year stay in League Two, highlighting their steady progression under manager Gareth Ainsworth since his 2012 appointment.

When Ainsworth took charge - initially as a caretaker - the club was struggling towards the bottom of the table, appearing at risk of a potential second straight relegation.

But he steered them clear of danger in 2012-13, before avoiding relegation out of the English Football League only on goal difference in the following campaign, and since then they have been looking up the table more often than down.

Their return to the third tier almost arrived in 2015, but they missed out on automatic promotion by a point, before losing that season's play-off final on penalties.

And, after two years outside of the top seven, Wycombe became top-three contenders this term partly thanks to a terrific run of seven wins from eight games straight after the turn of the year.

That streak propelled them from sixth to second in the table and, although their title hopes faded, Saturday's victory ensured their return to the third tier.

Only Luton have scored more League Two goals than Wycombe this term - and for the Chairboys' top scorer, Adebayo Akinfenwa, the promotion is his second from League Two in the space of three seasons after helping AFC Wimbledon go up in 2016.
