Glenavon were knocked out of the Europa League as they suffered a 5-1 second-leg defeat against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Molde in Norway.

Eirik Hestad scored a hat-trick for the home side after Etzaz Hussain had opened the scoring with a first-half penalty.

An own-goal by Vegard Forren had got Glenavon back into the tie at 3-1, but an injury time Babacar Sarr strike made it 6-3 on aggregrate.

The Lurgan Blues won the first leg 2-1.

Penalty decision sets Molde on course

Irish Premiership part-timers Glenavon were withstanding the early pressure from the home side well, with number two goalkeeper James Taylor looking assured.

Deputising for regular keeper Jonathan Tuffey, who was at a wedding, Taylor made a fantastic save in the fourth minute to keep out a powerful Fredrik Brustad header.

The visitors had threatened themselves before midfielder Mark Sykes was adjudged to have handled in the box as he sliced a 28th minute clearance.

Hussain made no mistake as he sent Taylor the wrong way to score from the spot.

Hestad, who had had given the Norwegian outfit the lead in their first-leg defeat at Mourneview Park, made it 2-0 in the 34th minute when he played a one-two with Daniel Chima before going round Taylor and slotting home.

His second came a minute before the hour-mark. Chima was again the provider as he cut it back for Hestad to blast into the roof of the net from eight yards.

Late goals bring an end to Glenavon resistance

Gary Hamilton's side had started the second half brightly and were rewarded for their efforts with Forren's OG three minutes after Hestad had made it 3-0.

Andrew Hall put a dangerous cross into the box and the defender's miscued clearance went into his own net.

The visitors had a penalty appeal of their own on 71 minutes when they felt Sykes was blocked in the box, but the referee waved play on.

Two minutes later Glenavon put together a fine passing move down the right which saw Niall Grace heading Sykes' cross into the path of Josh Daniels but the winger's shot was saved by Andreas Linde.

Two late goals killed off any chances of a fightback, with Hestad completing his hat-trick in the 90th minute.

There was an element of fortune to the goal as Taylor saved his initial shot, but the ball rebounded onto the striker and squirmed into the net.

Sarr rounded off the scoring four minutes into added time when he glanced home a header at the near post.

It was a disappointing end to what had been a spirited away performance from Glenavon, who were missing Sammy Clingan, Rhys Marshall, James Singleton and Andrew Mitchell as well as Tuffey.
