Jack Butland: Stoke City boss Gary Rowett expects England goalkeeper to stay

Stoke City boss Gary Rowett says the club have not had a "strong offer" for England goalkeeper Jack Butland.

City were relegated to the Championship last season and the 25-year-old, who was in the England squad at the World Cup, has been linked with a move away.

Stoke start the new season with a trip to Leeds on Sunday, 5 August, with the transfer window closing on 9 August.

"I expect him to stay, I hope he stays. I'm also pragmatic enough to know anything can happen," Rowett said.

"I imagine he would be the type of player who some teams would covet. I'm a realist but I hope he's still here.

"I can only react and answer what's in front of me. The answer is we haven't had an offer which the club feel is financially viable - or I don't think any strong offer yet.

"Jack has never made any real moves to want to leave and he's contracted to us and we're not even a week away from the first game."

Butland did not make an appearance in Russia but has played eight times for England and started all of Great Britain's matches at the 2012 Olympics.

Rowett does not think that playing in the second tier will hamper Butland's chances of adding to his tally of caps - the last of which came in England's final World Cup warm-up match against Costa Rica on 7 June.

"He's still the same goalkeeper, still got the same ability and we all know he's a goalkeeper who could quite easily play at one of the top six clubs," Rowett said.

    Goalkeepers have weird way of coming to prominence, and it's a fine line between success and failure
    Good keepers emerge from teams that let a lot of goal attempts get through
    When they save a few 'certs', spectacularly, they get noticed and bought by 'bigger' teams
    Butland is a classic case of a 'good keeper' behind a 'bad defence'
    Someone will buy him, he's more competent than many in the PL

    @ 6. Nice post. I'd definitely go with the theory that it could be a bad coach. I've seen 3-4 decent goalies join Liverpool recently, and they've all folded and turned into garbage after a few months with Achterberg. It can't be coincidence. Mignolet was highly rated at Sunderland, Karius was the best GK in Germany, Neuer aside. At LFC they turned into blaumanges. Maybe Stokes gk coach is as bad.

    While he is a very good goalkeeper, most PL clubs have a goalie at least as good as him, and he wont want to be a number 2, so best to stay at stoke, have a good season and get promoted. If that doesn't happen, would probably need to move on then

    Don't see why Chelsea don't move for him if cortouis goes to Madrid. They were initially bidding for him when he left Birmingham and would be a cheaper option than pickford who was England's first choice mainly due to his ability to play out from the back which isn't really Chelseas style anyway

    Can't believe Liverpool didn't go for him. Instead they have paid a fortune for a keeper with no PL experience who may or may not be a success.

    Been injured recently, so not the best time to approach him. If a bid does come in and he leaves, this doesnt promise him a good season at high level. If I was him, I will stay put for a season and get Stoke back up hence have a great season.

    Post 17....now here we have a post from an idiot who obviously talks out of his backside.....I went to watch the Stoke V Wolves game last week and if you actually watched them instead of gobbing off about something you know nothing about you would notice most of the game is now played along the ground. Hoofing it up, and a lot of teams do that, went away with Pullis.

    If his main concern is game time, Heaton proved that you can be in the England squad even if you're playing in the championship.

    It probably comes down to money though, so he'll likely move to a PL club. Sacrificing the nailed on starter status that he has at Stoke.

    Surely now would be the best time to get him as prices are only going to rise as an english keeper and in my opinion can see him impressing in the championship this season. I personally thought arsenal would have been a good move before they got Leno. Still a lot can happen before the window closes but definitely too good for the Championship.

    Post 30..I am a Stoke fan, went to watch them play Wolves last week and Stoke totally dominated the game against a strong Wolves side. Having said that, I know how difficult it is going to be to get out of the Championship, a notoriously difficult league. Some big clubs in the Championship, you only have to look at Derby, Villa, Forest, Sheff Utd/Wed, Leeds etc to know this isn't going to be easy!

    Hope he stays. If he goes to a big Premier League club may not get regular first team football. If he goes to a smaller Premier League club there's a risk of being relegated again. Neither of these will help his England career. Hopefully he will remain at Stoke will return to the top flight with them for the 2019/20 season.

    3. This is factually incorrect. Butland made one mistake leading to a goal all of last season, the OG vs Leicester. Also made a ton more saves, albeit due to poor defensive performances. Not sure why you feel the need to attack a young English GK playing for a mediocre team, whose team's mistakes were picked up on in every MOTD last season..

    10. Lost Sock

    Andy Quy is highly regarded as a GK coach. He's worked with Sorensen, Begovic and Butland, 3 very good PL GKs. He also coached Derby's 3rd choice GK in Lee Grant where he improved him massively as a GK. Grant performed very well for Stoke a couple of seasons ago (when Butland was injured) and now he's at Man Utd.

    Plenty of 'big' teams think that, Stoke will soon realize they are just one of a number of large clubs, trying (can't all get promoted) . . . . . And Rowett will bore you and everyone else to death!!
